Syllas Cave

It is regarded as one of the best preserved findings of the Roman times. It is situated in Loutra Edipsou, behind the hydrotherapy center of the Hellenic National Tourism Organization and near the church of Sts. Anargyroi. Syllas cave is a small construction with dome. The whole structure has been covered by the deposits of sulfurous waters gushing across the area and resembles a cave entrance. There are two massive statue pedestals illustrating inscriptions which pay tribute to the Roman emperors, Hadrian and Septimius Severus. The former also bears a later inscription dedicated to the Roman Emperor Contantine. The cave is associated with the Roman general Syllas who used to visit the hot springs to cure the arthritis in his legs.

Edipsos Archaeological Collection

The archaeological collection is housed in the hydrotherapy center of the Hellenic National Tourism Organization. Some of its massive exhibits, such as a huge statue of a man in the 2nd or 3rd century AD and a marble depicting Hercules’ symbols, his bow and his animal pelt, have been placed at the reception, on the ground floor. There are also two inscribed pedestals in honor of the local Roman rulers at the main entrance of the building. A marble column, that has been found in Gialtra village and dates back to the 4th century, is another noteworthy exhibit placed at the entrance hall of the archaeological museum. It illustrates a naked young man and part of Hercules’ Roman statue. The collection presents elements dating back to the prehistoric past of Edipsos and mainly findings from the excavations in the prehistoric Koumbi hill, 2km North of Loutra Edipsou. Ceramic samples dating from the Geometric to the Roman Times and found in Gialtra village and land excavations at the center of Loutra Edipsou are also displayed. The Mycenean sword discovered at Kastaniotissa village, axes and chisels from Kantili mountain are available for viewing, too.

Kyma (wave)

Kyma is a beautiful building based on columns in the sea; once it used to be the most visited traditional café in Edipsos. Having made multiannual efforts designed by both local agents and ordinary citizens, the registered trademark for Edipsos managed to enter the National Strategic Reference in 2012. It was reconstructed and delivered to the Port Authority in 2016 and still constitutes a cultural monument accessible to visitors.

Hotel Heraclion and Hotel Stadion (stadium)

They are two of the first hotels built in the early Modern Times of Edipsos. They are admirable monuments for the town because of their outstanding architectural features. Hotel Stadion is still operating while Hotel Heraclion has been out of operation since 2010. Visitors principally praise the architecture and the historical value of both hotels.

The Old Hydrotherapy Center

This hydrotherapy center made Edipsos famous all around the world. Nowadays, it is a neoclassical architectural jewel in appearance with a rich in vegetation yard decorated with a fountain. Unfortunately, the inside of the building has not been reachable yet; efforts are made to restore it so that it will be accessible.

Roman Baths of Gialtra

This little town which is not far from Edipsos once had valuable thermal baths. Nowadays, only bits of the ancient baths remain along the beach. However, visitors can still dive in thermal waters.

Sanctuary of Artemis Proseioas

Ruins of an archaic temple paying tribute to the goddess Artemis are saved just outside the small village of Pefki. The temple had been probably built during the 3rd or 4th century BC. The inscriptions around the poles refer to the celebrating dances and rituals for the Greek victory in the naval battle at Artemisio. We can observe the Cape Artemisio from the sanctuary. This historically significant cave where the Athenians led be Xerxes defeated the Persians in 480 BC is also known for its impulsive and dangerous waters that spelled many sailors’ early death.

Natural History Museum

The Museum houses the largest collection of stuffed birds in Greece as well as a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rocks and minerals, fossils and shells. It intends to educate the public on the rich natural and geological history of the area and encourage both visitors and residents to take an active role in the environmental protection.

Drosini Tower

This Tower situated in Gouves village has accomodated the Greek poet Georgios Drosinis. The two-storey construction surrounded by stone walls had been built by a slave 50 years before the poet’s birth, during the Ottoman occupation. The slave gained his freedom in return for his pivotal project. The tower is a design of Venetian architecture and still remains well-preserved although renovations are needed.

The Bull in Oreoi Village

A marble statue depicts a bull in physical size being upright in attacking position. The statue was taken off from the sea at Oreoi port in 1965 and was raised in funerary monument of the 4th century BC.

Beaches

Across North Euboea, the coastline constantly alternates satisfying even the most demanding guests. On the west side, you can find sandy, blue-coloured beaches which are also peaceful, warm and ideal for families. The north side comprises sandy beaches with deep waters and streams overlooking the Aegean Sea. The latter are perfect for water sports. Finally, the east coast provides beaches with pebbles.

 

Monopetra Beach (beach with a single huge stone)

Adults claim that Monopetra Beach is suitable only for children. Visitors have to cross a path hidden behind the Hotel Stadion to arrive at this isolated beach. But don’t hesitate to try it! Monopetra is the most beautiful shore and enables visitors to enjoy the view of the eastern part of Edipsos.

Plaz and Thermae Sylla Beach

In the eastern part of Edipsos, there is the regulated beach of the town Plaz which consists of two thermal waterfalls ideal for sea cure. Thermae Sylla Beach composed of white grit is located next to Plaz. Its natural erosion makes the beach one of the most impressive in the area as enables bathers to enjoy the thermal waters gushing out the sea. This seashore truly represents a very unique mix of marine and thermal waters; as a result, the sea remains warm all year round.

The sandy beach in St. Nicholas is 2 km away from Loutra Edipsou. Visit the seaside taverns, savour the fresh fish and drink the Greek tsipouro!

Chrysi Akti (golden beach)

Chrisi Akti is 16 km away from Edipsos, next to Club Med outside Lichada village. The short journey to the beach will offer you an amazing view at the turquoise-coloured North Euboean Gulf. In several people’s opinion, Chrysi Akti is the most exciting beach with golden sand and natural shade created by the piles. You can try water sports and drink a refreshing cocktail from the beach bar.

Kavos Beach

The most western beach in Euboea looks across to the small islets of Lihadonisia and offers swimmers a long beach which combines sand and stones. You will meet beach bars and seaside taverns providing umbrellas and sunbeds for free. Impressive trees are also cultivated above the shore.

Lichadonisia

Lichades or else Lichadonisia is a complex of isles located between the settlement of Lichada in Euboea and that of Kamena Vourla in Fthiotida. It’s the result of volcanic activity; a large part of them sank in a big earthquake occurred in 426 BC. Nowadays, Lichadonisia can be considered as a perfect tourist destination for cruises due to their golden sand, their clear waters and their incredibly beautiful landscape. There are two possible ways to get there. The first one includes an one-hour drive along the coastal road to Kavos Beach where you will find a small boat which takes you at your destination. The second one is to take the boat Charalambos which makes one-day daily cruises from the port of Edipsos. The boat tour includes tour around the island complex in which you will also be infomed about the shipwrecked happened there. If you are lucky, you may meet the seals living in the region. The sea is ideal for submarine fishing and diving.

Padermos Beach

This sandy shore with the homonymous beach bar is 7 km away from Edipsos. It has become famous for the Padermos Free Festival which is organized there every year.

Nisiotissa Beach

A sandy beach with blue, shallow waters and view at an island decorated with the ruins of an ancient tower on tis top could be certainly regarded as a good choice. You can swim to the little island but be careful of the rocks! You can also buy something to drink or eat at the available canteen. Nisiotissa is 10 km away from Edipsos, just before Neos Pyrgos village.

North Euboea is an ideal place for cycling. Rent a bicycle and discover either the Northwestern side of the area which is particularly picturesque or follow the coastal road leading to Riviera Beach Bar. Moreover, Mountain Telethrion provides mountaineering lovers with amazing tracks inside the forest.

Northern Euboea’s dense forests provide walkers with dreamy paths. You can hike from Drymonas waterfalls to Mountain Ksiron within 4 hours enjoying the view which extends from Sporades to the coastline of Central Greece. The journey from Ilia village to Dafnokouki waterfalls lasts 1,5 hour overlooking the North Euboean Gulf while the route from Lichada village to the church of Prophet Elias lasts 2,5 hours gazing at Lichadonisia. Religious Tourism

The extremely interesting monasteries of the area attract believers from all around the world. Prokopi village with the church of St. Ioannis the Russian, which is the most known in the area, is less than an hour drive. Furthermore, the monastery of Osios David in memory of the Transfiguration is a half-hour drive. This great monastery celebrating on 1st November includes catacombs accessible to visitors as well as a small chapel built in a cave not far off the monastery. Yet there are many other considerable monasteries in the region, such as the monastery of St. George in Ilia village, Galataki monastery in Limni and the church dedicated to Virgin Dinious outside Istiaia, worth visiting, too.

Cruise to Lichadonisia

The boat Charalambos makes daily cruises from Edipsos port to Lichadonisia almost every day. It departs at 10 am and arrives at the largest isle Stroggyli after an approximately hourly tour in the Northern Euboean Gulf, the shipwreck and the most impressive complex of islands created by volcanic eruprion. You will really enjoy the landscape and your swim at this lush island. Finally, the boat departs from the island at 4 pm.

Cruise to Skiathos

Daily cruises to Skiathos are made from Pefki port. The boat departs 9 am and the journey lasts one hour and a quarter. First, you will visit the picturesque town of Skiathos and you will have plenty of time to enjoy admire the island. Later, you will depart for Koukounaries, one of the most popular beaches in Greece. The boat leaves the port at 6 pm and returns to Pefki.

Follow the coastal road from Edipsos to Gialtra using your car. After a wonderful drive with plenty of trees along the seaside and having met St. Nicholas, Riviera and Porto Pefko beaches, you will arrive at Vrinioti Winery in Gialtra village. A Visit to Drymonas Waterfalls

Drymonas waterfalls located right after the monastery of Osios David, a 45-minute way from Edipsos, constitute an extremely beautiful place. The local Forestry Service has created natural tree trunks, ropes and bridges so that the excursionists will be able to admire the exciting waterfalls through a short hiking route. Sipias river can also offer you a charming experience as its waters fall from 15 meters height into a crystal-water lake surrounded by rocks and forests.
